Anti-SDLP Election Poster
This is an election poster, understood to date back to the early 1980s, declaring the apparent inadequacy of leader of the SDLP, John Hume. While this poster is not directly tied to Sinn Féin, it was produced by the Republican movement as a collective statement of disgruntlement with Hume’s actions. The poster quotes Hume as having supported internment, a controversial policy which was largely directed at nationalists. This paints him as a sympathizer with both Unionist and British policy. This was a key tactic taken by Republicans to suggest the SDLP was too moderate to represent the nationalist community.
This campaign methodology is consistent with expected behavior within a tribunal party system, especially in one so heavily entrenched in ethnic divisions. Sinn Féin would have little benefit from trying to gain voters from the unionist bloc as the chance of these voters switching is ostensibly unlikely. However, to try to gain voters from the moderate nationalists is a viable option (Mitchell, O’Leary, and Evans 2006). Thus, messaging is that, the more extreme parties, not named explicitly in the poster but presumably Sinn Féin, better represent the views and desires of the nationalist community. Moreover, an essential part of this strategy is to declare that the livelihood, existence, or safety of their specific community is at risk (Mitchell, O’Leary, and Evans 2006). Although internment had been largely phased out by the time Sinn Féin was competitively contesting elections, it had in recent history posed a serious risk to the nationalist community, both extremists and moderates (Melaugh 2023). Thus, arguing SDLP to be “the party whose leader recommends internment” was an effective campaign ushering nationalists to support Sinn Féin.
